What steps are involved in learning the skills required to be excellent in the field doing live sales calls?
The first step to getting really good at sales, in my opinion, is to take a personality profile assessment.
Once you understand your personality profile you will have a better insight into what behaviors you will be able to do and what you won’t be able to do.
The next step is to start learning.
I recommend these must-reads:
- The Psychology of Selling by Brian Tracy
- Social Selling by Timothy Hughes
- Selling to Zebras by Jeff Koser
I recommend these podcasts:
- Sales Babble with Pat Helmers is for new salespeople.
- The Brutal Truth About Sales and Selling with Brian Burns is for B2B salespeople.
- Selling From the Heart with Larry Levine and Darrel Amy is for everyone.
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
There is no replacement for getting out into the field and doing sales calls.
You need to practice your presentations and develop your natural speaking and conversational skills.
You need to interview customers and ask them for feedback and input.
You need to practice using silence to close the deal.
GET A COACH
Finally, don’t try to do it alone.
Get your manager and other experienced salespeople to provide you with mentoring and coaching.
Use your social media and personal branding to attract the kind of people who can help you develop and become better.
You can schedule a meeting with me for 30-minutes of free coaching by going to my contact page on my website.
Sales is a wonderful career option for many people.
Don’t be discouraged if after a few weeks or even months you are still struggling. It takes years to develop into a true Sales Professional but once you achieve that level of experience it is amazing what you can earn and accomplish.
