Aftertreatment is one of the largest expenses a fleet has, but whether you’re buying or selling DPF filters, DOC’s, or any aftertreatment part, there are important things you need to know beforehand.
Recently we interviewed Scott Boltz, VP of Commercial Diesel Products at Global Emissions Systems.
First off, when it comes to selling DPF filters, the real important thing is to view it as a system, not just as a component. By addressing it as a system, you can actually help the fleet reduce their cost-per-mile. In other words, you are not just looking at the product itself, but you are making sure you know how it fits in the overall system, how it works, what it does for the entire system. If we do not do this, we can miss things, and it can actually cost more because of unscheduled downtime.
When it comes to selling Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOC’s), it is also crucial to know what it does, how it works, thus enabling you to better help out fleets. As a fleet though, this knowledge about DOC’s is also essential because when DOC’s start to reduce functionality, the fleet has no solid way of knowing it. So, when the fleet is not looking at their regen cycles, this can cause unscheduled downtimes, which means unplanned costs.
Overall, when it comes to DPF’s and DOC’s, most people don’t know how valuable, and important these systems truly are. However, once you understand their function as a whole, it’s not that complicated.
In 2027, there is a new target for emissions in the United States. How is this going to impact the aftertreatment sector?
At the time mark 4:42, Scott said,
“There is going to be a significant impact, we do necessarily know what it is yet…There is no clear definition of what they want to do other than reduce NOx gases by another 90%. If you go from the pre-2010 engine until now, there has been an 83% reduction of NOx gases, so they want to take that even lower.”
If you are someone who buys aftertreatment parts, what are the three most important things you need to consider?
To summarize what Scott said,
The most important factors are availability, cost, and reliability. He mentioned a saying he heard from a customer, and it said, “He who has it wins”. So, if you are looking for aftertreatment parts, you want to be able to get those parts as soon as possible. Along with that though, the cost of the parts and the quality of them is very important. Asking yourself what part is going to give you the best cost-per-mile will save you in the long run.
Above all, to ensure you get the best cost-per-mile, make sure you treat your aftertreatment system as a system, and always do regular maintenance on these systems to increase uptime and decrease downtime.
