What You Need to Know About Diesel Fuel Injection Systems

When it comes down to your diesel engine, you want to be able to rely on it to be able to get you where you need to go. You want to be sure you are using high-quality parts that can last.

Recently, we had the opportunity to interview Robert Isherwood of AMBAC International.

You may have heard someone say, “This is a diesel engine; the problem should be easy to diagnose.” However, the most accurate part of that statement is that it is a diesel engine. Diesel engines have many intricate moving parts, and their problems may not always be easy to narrow down. Luckily though, with the new era of electronic diesels, technicians can link up with a scan tool to try to pinpoint the issue.

Some problems though may be a lot tougher to diagnose.

As a diesel truck owner, you may at one point have issues regarding your diesel fuel injection system. But what is the most common reason for this problem?

Robert said it best when he said: (2:45)

“Proper maintenance is the number 1 thing you can do to lower your cost-per-mile… 99% of the time when someone has fuel injector failure, it’s dirt. Dirt and water destroy more fuel injectors than anything else.”

When we see a fault code, it just tells you what is hurting, it does not tell you WHY it is hurting. That is why experienced mechanics are so valuable, because they have the knowledge, and experience to be able to figure out the root cause of the problem.

What if you do need to get new parts for your fuel injection system?

AMBAC offers a couple of different options. One of them being part of their remanufacturing system. When we think of reman parts, we may first jump to the conclusion that they are just repaired or refurbished parts, but that is not accurate. Remanufactured parts are of very high quality because they go through the process of bringing the parts back to, or above OEM standards. So, in turn, you are not getting passed off parts, you’re getting top of the line parts.

Along with having a reman program, AMBAC also has several other services that they offer, including access to their labs. What makes AMBAC’s labs so significant?

At the 12:27 mark, Robert said:

“Having the heritage of fuel injection requires extreme accuracy. AMBAC measures in microns, (1 millionth of a meter), which is 1/100th the thickness of a human hair. Because they can do this, AMBAC has capabilities that few in the world can match and are able to provide services that others can’t.”

AMBAC has been around for over 100 years, and over the years has taken the lead in accepting, and adopting new technology, and will continue to do so in the future.
