How to Succeed as a Leader in the First 18-Months with Ron Carucci

3 Key Points in this Episode:

  1. We need to learn how to accurately understand the context of each situation.
  2. We need to develop a wide range of experience to make us adaptable but also must be able to make hard decisions and narrow our focus.
  3. We need to connect with those people we lead by building trust with them.

Show Notes:

Episode 117: Brian Tracy once said, “leadership is what the world needs more now than ever before.”

We need to be the best leaders we can be to not only make our businesses successful but also to solve the many problems our communities, countries, and society globally face.

Since leadership is so important it should be very alarming to learn how many leaders are failing. That is why I brought today’s guest on the show because we need to understand why leaders are failing and what to do about it.

Bio of Today’s Guest

My guest today, Ron Carucci, led a ten-year longitudinal study on executive transition to find out why more than 50% of leaders fail within their first 18 months of appointment and uncovered the four differentiating capabilities that set successful leaders apart.

Those findings are highlighted in his ground-breaking Amazon #1 book Rising To Power, co-authored with Eric Hansen. These findings are also summarized by Ron in the popular HBR article, Executives Fail to Execute Strategy Because They’re Too Internally Focused.

HBR selected that research as one of 2016’s “Ideas that mattered most”, and he recently presented it on their Facebook Live Series. You can read the article and watch the video by going to jamieirvine.ca and I have all the links in the show notes for episode 117.

You can read more of Ron’s insights at HBR, Forbes, and on his blog.

Ron also mentioned two books he recommends in the interview, The Coddling of the American Mind and Leading Transformation: Taking Charge of Your Company’s Future.

Key Take Away

The key takeaway from today’s episode is that there are 4 distinct areas that we can focus on to be successful leaders. We need to learn how to accurately understand the context of each situation, we need to develop a wide range of experience to make us adaptable, we need to be able to make hard decisions and narrow our focus, and finally we need to connect with those people we lead by building trust with them.
